eReader vs Tablet

Most people who want to buy a device for reading will choose either an eReader or a tablet. For some people the difference between the two might not be completely clear. There are some big differences between the two though, and it’s not just the size that’s often different.

Screen

Most eReaders (the decent ones) use an e-ink screen. E-ink is a technology that can be used in screens to make them resemble real paper. An E-ink screen doesn’t strain the eyes and it has very long battery life. Disadvantages are that many E-ink screens are only black and white. Most eReaders also have a smaller screen compared to tablets.

Tablets usually use LCD screens, we all know LCD screens, they can display everything in color and they look great, but they do strain our eyes, especially when reading. On top of that the battery life of LCD screens is quite poor compared to e-ink screens.

Functionality

If the question is: how many things can my device handle? The tablet will easily win the battle. Tablets are suited to do many kinds of things. They are ideal for browsing, playing games, watching movies, listening to music and even some simple administrative work (as long as special programs are available). Almost all tasks that can be performed on a computer can also be performed on a tablet.

If you are only interested in reading however, an eReader will offer you a superior performance. The screen is just so much easier on the eyes. As long as special eBook formats are being used the eReader is the ideal device for reading. Most eReaders are not as well suited for other tasks though, as the screen is only black and white and most eReaders have a relatively small screen.

Pricing

When comparing prices between tablets and eReaders, you will find that most eReaders are quite a lot cheaper than tablets. In terms of functionality this makes sense. A tablet is like a small computer with a touchscreen while an eReader is really primarily meant for reading and doesn’t offer much other functionality.

Conclusion

Based on all information that we’ve stated above, drawing a conclusion is quite easy. If you plan to use your device primarily for reading and want great battery life, the eReader seems like the easy choice. If you would like a device that is multi-functional and don’t mind spending a bit more money, the tablet might be more suitable for you.

BeBook introduces new eReader ‘Club S’

BeBook has announced that they will release an update of the BeBook Club. The successor to the current model, the BeBook Club S, will have a better screen with Pearl E-ink, a faster processor and longer battery life. The new eReader will be shown during the IFA electronic fair in Berlin from September 2 to 7.

In a press release, BeBook says their current model, the BeBook Club, was their best-selling model over the past year and they want to keep the specifications of the model up to date compared to the other products on the market.

The processor of the BeBook Club S will be upgraded to an 800 MHz Marvell processor (from 533 MHz), the capacity of the battery will be doubled and the internal memory will be upgraded to 2GB.

The biggest improvement however is the new Pearl E-ink screen, which offers a better contrast and a better refresh rate. Sony and Amazon have already used these screens in their eReaders.

Most of the other specifications are equal to the Club S. At the time of writing, no announcements have been made regarding the price of the BeBook S Club.
